Working in Colombia: visa routes and limitations

A Colombian job is not the same as remote work for an overseas client. Check the proper authorization before starting.

Different visa categories

An M worker visa is a distinct category from various V visas authorizing certain temporary services or activities. The employer, job type, proposed length of stay and nationality can affect the correct path. Do not assume every V visa grants employment rights.

Your contract and employer

The Cancillería’s current visa directory sets out category-specific requirements such as contracts, employer financial documents and professional authorization where relevant. Requirements change by the specific visa sought, so avoid universal document checklists circulated online.

Path toward residence

Under current R-by-time criteria, eligible accumulated status on an M worker visa normally has a five-year threshold for a residence application. This is one requirement only: continuity, paperwork and the authority’s determination still matter.
