Colombia resident visa (R): routes and timelines

Time-accumulation route

Cancillería’s published R criteria list qualifying M visa categories and different minimum periods: three years for M spouse, five years for M permanent partner, worker, pensionado and investor, and other category-specific periods. The time must meet the rules on valid status and supporting records.

Evidence and application

A typical time-based application can require prior visas, immigration movement records, evidence of support or activity, and current identification, depending on the category. This is not an exhaustive checklist: use the current official R section.

Resident visa transfer and older records

Certain older permanent-resident visas are covered by a specific October 31, 2026 transfer deadline. That is different from a new R application; read the separate alert for its narrow applicability.
