Seeking refugee protection in Colombia: official process

A careful introduction to Colombia’s refugee-status procedure, documentation and important limitations — without invented timelines or promises.

Last reviewed: October 29, 2026

Who handles refugee determination?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería) manages the formal refugee-status determination process through its designated authorities. Migración Colombia has distinct roles in migration control and documentation. Refugee recognition, temporary documentation and a residence visa are not interchangeable.

Application and follow-up

Use the Cancillería’s current official instructions to find the submission method, required account of facts, supporting materials and any filing time limits or exceptions. Keep copies and monitor official communications. Do not send detailed persecution narratives, identification scans or evidence through this website’s general contact form.

Temporary documents and work

A salvoconducto SC-2 can be relevant to an admitted application under applicable requirements. Whether, when and how it authorizes work depends on the current law and the document’s conditions. Do not rely on a generic statement that every applicant may work immediately; check the issuing authority and legal advice.

How long will it take?

Cancillería does not provide a fixed legal end-to-end deadline for the determination procedure. Avoid third-party promises of a guaranteed interview, decision within 3–12 months or automatic approval. The facts and evidence of each individual claim matter.

Help and confidentiality

For urgent legal or protection concerns, seek information from official Cancillería channels, UNHCR (ACNUR) or qualified refugee-rights counsel. Do not publish your location or details that could create a protection risk. This editorial guide is not individualized legal advice.
